SLAP Tears Symptoms
SLAP, short for Superior Labrum Anterior and Posterior, is a common shoulder injury primarily affecting athletes involved in overhead sports like baseball, tennis, and volleyball. The SLAP injury occurs when there is damage to the labrum, a ring of cartilage surrounding the shoulder socket.
Symptoms of a SLAP injury include:
- Shoulder Pain: Persistent pain deep within the shoulder joint, especially during overhead movements.
- Weakness: Difficulty in performing activities requiring arm strength, like lifting or throwing.
- Catching or Popping Sensation: Some individuals may experience a catching or popping sensation when moving their shoulder.
- Decreased Range of Motion: Limited mobility and stiffness in the shoulder joint.
- Instability: Feeling like the shoulder might “pop out” or become unstable.
Several factors contribute to SLAP injuries, including:
- Overuse: Repetitive overhead motions, common in sports like baseball or swimming, can gradually wear down the labrum.
- Trauma: Direct impact or a fall onto the shoulder can cause a SLAP tear.
- Age-related Degeneration: As individuals age, the labrum may weaken, making it more susceptible to injury.
- Anatomical Variations: Some individuals may have a naturally predisposed anatomy that increases the risk of SLAP injuries.
