Frozen Shoulder Symptoms & Causes

Frozen Shoulder, medically known as adhesive capsulitis, is a debilitating condition characterized by stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually over time and can significantly hinder daily activities and quality of life.

Causes of Frozen Shoulder

The exact cause of Frozen Shoulder is not always clear, but several factors may contribute to its development:

  • Inflammation and Thickening: Inflammation and thickening of the shoulder capsule, the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint, are primary culprits. This can restrict movement and cause pain.
  • Scar Tissue Formation: Injury or trauma to the shoulder can lead to the formation of scar tissue within the joint, further restricting movement and causing discomfort.
  • Underlying Health Conditions: Certain health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and heart disease are associated with an increased risk of developing Frozen Shoulder. The reasons for this correlation are not fully understood but may involve changes in connective tissue health or immune function.
  • Immobility or Inactivity: Prolonged periods of immobility or inactivity, such as recovering from surgery or injury, can contribute to the development of Frozen Shoulder. Lack of movement can cause the shoulder capsule to become tight and stiff.
  • Age and Gender: Frozen Shoulder is more common in individuals aged 40 to 60 and occurs more frequently in women than in men. Hormonal factors may play a role in this gender disparity.
