Meniscus Tear - Symptoms & Cause

A meniscus tear is a common knee injury that involves damage to the rubbery cartilage discs, called menisci, which act as shock absorbers between the shinbone and thighbone. Here’s a brief overview of what it entails:

The meniscus tear occurs when one or both of the C-shaped discs in the knee joint become damaged or torn. These discs are made of tough cartilage and play a crucial role in stabilizing the knee, absorbing shock, and distributing weight evenly across the joint.

Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear:

  • Pain, especially when twisting or rotating the knee
  • Swelling and stiffness
  • Difficulty straightening the knee fully
  • Feeling of instability or locking of the knee
  • Popping or clicking sensation during movement

Causes of a Meniscus Tear:

  • Sudden twisting or rotating of the knee, often during sports or physical activities
  • Direct blow to the knee
  • Degenerative changes due to aging, where the cartilage weakens over time
