AC joint Dislocation Symptoms
AC joint dislocation Symptoms, or acromioclavicular joint dislocation, occurs when the collarbone (clavicle) separates from the shoulder blade (scapula) at the point where they meet on the highest part of the shoulder, known as the acromion. This injury is commonly seen in athletes, particularly those involved in contact sports like football, rugby, or hockey.
Symptoms of AC joint dislocation include:
- Pain: Intense pain at the top of the shoulder, particularly when moving the arm or lifting objects.
- Swelling: Swelling and tenderness around the AC joint.
- Deformity: Visible deformity or bump at the top of the shoulder due to the dislocation.
- Limited range of motion: Difficulty in moving the arm, especially when raising it overhead or across the body.
- Weakness: Weakness in the shoulder and arm muscles due to pain and instability.
Common causes of AC joint dislocation include:
- Trauma: Direct impact to the shoulder, such as a fall onto the shoulder or a blow to the side of the shoulder, can cause the collarbone to dislocate from the shoulder blade.
- Sports injuries: Participating in sports that involve collision or heavy contact increases the risk of AC joint dislocation.
- Accidents: Motor vehicle accidents or other traumatic incidents can result in AC joint dislocation.
- Overuse: Repetitive overhead arm movements, common in activities like weightlifting or throwing sports, can lead to gradual wear and tear of the AC joint, making it more susceptible to dislocation.
